Mini IVF (minimal stimulation in vitro fertilisation) is a variation of IVF similar to standard IVF with milder drug doses, less egg retrieval but lower cost.
At Neelkanth Hospital, we offer the best mini IVF treatment under highly qualified and experienced experts and persistent efforts. We are proficiently equipped with a world-class laboratory and the latest advanced technological equipment for ensuring treatment accuracy and success.
What is a mini IVF cycle?
Mini IVF, also called minimal stimulation IVF, is an infertility procedure which follows the same overall methods as conventional IVF but employs lower drug doses at the treatment’s beginning for stimulating your ovaries. The result includes lower egg production than in conventional IVF.
Mini IVF is opted by some women because of the lower possibility of an adverse reaction to the stimulation medicines including OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome).
How many eggs are retrieved in a mini IVF?
While the aim of standard IVF is the production of 15-20 eggs for retrieval (with 4-5 eggs of high quality), mini IVF treatment can retrieve only 4-8 eggs. There’s also a chance of retrieving no eggs at all in some cases.
Who is a good candidate for mini IVF?
You are a good candidate for mini IVF in the following cases:
- You have diminished ovarian reserve
- You are worried about using strong stimulation drugs
- You are going to start cancer treatment
- You want a lower-cost infertility treatment option
- You require timely infertility treatment
A standard IVF cycle stimulates your ovaries to produce the maximum count of eggs. If your ovarian reserve has decreased, your ovaries would contain eggs of poor quality or only a few eggs. Hence, even with fertility medication, you would not be able to produce the high count of eggs required for a standard IVF. Since mini IVF uses fewer eggs, it’s more attainable in this case.
Since mini IVF involves a lower dose of medicine, it lowers the risk of having drug reactions. Specific reactions, including those of ovarian hyperstimulation of syndrome (OHSS), may interfere with your fertility treatment completely or slow it down. Many patients want to use fewer medications if possible and use fewer drugs in their conception.
This is also helpful if you are afraid of needles. Fewer stimulation drugs mean fewer injections.
Besides, it also helps if you suffer from PCOS and have a risk of developing OHSS.
If you want to have IVF for preserving your fertility before your cancer treatment, too many stimulation drugs as in standard IVF may exasperate your cancer. In this case, mini IVF is a better option.
Mini IVF needs fewer doctor visits and uses less medication than standard IVF. So it is much less expensive, almost half the cost per cycle of standard IVF. This low-cost advantage can particularly help if the first round is not successful since it gives you the option to retry without needing to pay for another whole cycle of standard IVF.
Mini IVF is an excellent option for infertility couples requiring IVF who especially have a busy schedule. It needs fewer doctor visits, ultrasounds and bloodwork than conventional IVF.
What is the difference between IVF and IVF Lite?
IVF Lite involves a simpler treatment schedule with a lighter medication dose and a lower risk from over-stimulation and multiple pregnancies than conventional IVF.
According to studies, treatment duration with a mild approach is shorter with milder drug doses and fewer patients quit treatment.
How much does a mini IVF cost?
Mini IVF costs around 1.2 lakh INR on an average in India.
How successful is a mini IVF?
Mini IVF usually has lower success rates than standard IVF. However, it does not mean it isn’t a better option for some couples.
Mini IVF was compared to standard IVF in a randomised control study with 564 women of 39 or more age. They were randomly assigned to a conventional IVF or a mini-IVF group and went through treatment over 6 months.
The results of the study showed:
- 49% of the mini-IVF candidates conceived and finally had childbirth.
- 63% of the standard-IVF candidates conceived and ultimately underwent childbirth.
- None of the mini-IVF candidates developed OHSS.
- 5.7% of the standard-IVF candidates developed OHSS.
- In the mini-IVF group, fewer gonadotropins were used significantly. This reduced the overall cost per cycle.
According to other sources, 10% is the success rate of mini IVF per cycle as compared to 30-47% in conventional IVF.
What is a mini IVF protocol?
Mini IVF is the trademarked minimal stimulation in IVF protocol. Mini IVF, much like natural cycle IVF, involves a holistic approach to fertility therapy, offering a gentle alternative to standard IVF. It varies from Natural IVF cycle in using a minimal oral medication for stimulating your ovaries to produce the maximum count of “quality” eggs per cycle.
